Abstract

|
The anatomical atrioventricular node was first described by Tawara in 1906. Erlanger in 1912 localized the major portion of delay attributed to a latency at the transition between contraction of atria and nodal fibers. A century of research on properties of the atrioventricular (AV) node has occurred since Tawara’s discovery. However, many aspect of AV nodal physiology have remained mysterious. Nonetheless, advance in imaging modalities and molecular biology are helping to decipher the nature of the AV node.
